In an episode of the MindShift Power Podcast, we had the privilege of discussing the intricacies of phobias with Dr. Kimberly Boynton, a licensed marriage and family therapist from Southern California with over twenty years of experience working with teens. Hosted by the dynamic Fatima Bey, this episode delves into the nature of phobias, their impact, and strategies to overcome them.
Dr. Boynton explains that phobias are intense and irrational fears of specific objects, situations, or activities that pose little to no actual danger. "People with phobias often experience excessive anxiety and panic attacks when confronted with the source of their fear," she shares. Phobias can significantly impact daily life, causing individuals to go to great lengths to avoid their triggers.
One key point discussed is the distinction between fear and phobia. While fear is a temporary emotional response that diminishes once the threat has passed, phobia is more intense and persistent. "Phobia goes beyond a normal, proportional threat, leading to excessive distress and anxiety," Dr. Boynton explains. Fear can turn into a phobia if it becomes a prolonged and controlling aspect of one's life.
Dr. Boynton identifies social anxiety phobia as one of the most common phobias among teens, especially in the wake of the pandemic. "Social distancing has caused a huge phobia of social interactions," she notes. Teens are struggling to navigate social settings and find their place after being isolated for so long.
The conversation also highlights the idea that what we feed will grow. "If you feed your fears, they can turn into phobias," Dr. Boynton asserts. She advises against consuming negative media and news, which can perpetuate fears and lead to phobias. "Stop watching the news when you wake up in the morning because you're setting your whole day of fear," she suggests.
Dr. Boynton shares her personal experience with a fear of snakes. She found a way to see the beauty in them by focusing on their colors and uniqueness. "Find something positive in that negative," she advises. This approach can help reduce the intensity of the phobia.
Dr. Kimberly Boynton's insights remind us that phobias are intense fears that can be managed and overcome with the right strategies and support. By seeking help, educating ourselves, and practicing positive visualization, we can shift our mindset and reduce the impact of phobias on our lives.
