School Shootings, STEM, and the Future of Tech: A Conversation with Principal Jojo

I'm Fatima Bey The MindShifter, and I'm excited to share insights from a recent episode of MindShift Power Podcast. In this episode, I had a candid conversation with Principal Jojo from New York State about school shootings, STEM programs, and the future of technology.

School Shootings: An Urban Perspective

Principal Jojo shared a unique perspective on school shootings, highlighting that these tragic events are less common in urban schools with predominantly Black and Brown students. He explained that students in these settings often view school as a safe haven and are less likely to engage in such violence within its walls. He also pointed out that access to weapons might be a contributing factor to the difference in frequency.

STEM Programs: Beyond College

We discussed the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs and how they offer diverse career paths beyond traditional four-year colleges. Principal Jojo emphasized that STEM education can lead to various opportunities, including skilled trades and technical roles that are in high demand. He shared examples of companies seeking individuals with hands-on skills and creative problem-solving abilities, highlighting the potential for lucrative careers without a traditional college degree.

The Makerspace: Unleashing Creativity

Principal Jojo enthusiastically described his school's maker space, equipped with tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, and vinyl cutters. He shared inspiring stories of students creating and selling their products, fostering entrepreneurship and innovation. He also highlighted the Fab Foundation and its global network of fab labs, providing access to digital fabrication resources for individuals and communities worldwide.

The Future of Tech: AI and Beyond

We delved into the future of technology, discussing the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on various industries. Principal Jojo acknowledged the potential of AI to streamline tasks and enhance efficiency but stressed the importance of balance. He emphasized that human skills and creativity will remain crucial, even in a technologically advanced world.

A Call to Action

Principal Jojo urged adults working with youth to continue nurturing their STEM interests and exposing them to diverse opportunities. He encouraged educators and mentors to identify and cultivate hidden talents, opening doors to unexpected career paths. He also emphasized the importance of experiential learning, allowing students to discover their passions through hands-on activities and real-world experiences.

MindShifting Moment:

Principal Jojo's insights on school shootings challenge conventional thinking and shed light on the importance of understanding diverse perspectives. His emphasis on STEM education beyond college underscores the vast opportunities available to young people with varied skills and interests. His call to action to nurture and expose youth to STEM fields resonates deeply, reminding us of the power of mentorship and experiential learning.
