In an episode of the MindShift Power Podcast, we had the privilege of exploring the impactful insights of Roger Pollard, a high school teacher, owner of Motive and Motivation, and a powerful motivational speaker from Miami, Florida. Hosted by the dynamic Fatima Bey, this episode delves into the importance of guiding young men through their challenges.
Roger shares that one of the most common expressions from young men in high school is their dislike for certain subjects or classes. He emphasizes the importance of focusing on facts and goals rather than feelings. "As a male in our society, our feelings kinda really don't matter," he asserts. Instead, young men should concentrate on what they are trying to attain and work towards those results.
Roger notes that many young men express disinterest in subjects like math or English. He encourages them to focus on the results and the effort required to achieve them. "We're either gonna be result oriented or we're gonna be feeling oriented, but we cannot wish to get the results from the feelings," he explains. The key is to direct their actions towards achieving their goals, regardless of their initial feelings.
Roger draws parallels between the discipline required in sports and academics. He emphasizes the importance of organization and effort in both areas. "If we use the things that make us successful in these sports, then those things travel across different domains," he says. By applying the same dedication and planning to their academic pursuits, young men can achieve success.
One of the biggest challenges Roger identifies for young men today is organization and managing distractions. He advises them to develop a system for managing their tasks and to be mindful of the distractions that can hinder their progress. "Put everything that's important to you that has to do with school in one location and come up with a system," he recommends.
Roger acknowledges that many young men feel like the world is against them. He advises them to focus on self-reflection and identifying their goals. "Figure out who you are. What do you like? Why do you like it? And where is what you like leading you?" he encourages. By understanding their own actions and influences, young men can navigate their social challenges more effectively.
Roger highlights the importance of setting goals and the impact it has on positive emotions. "The only way the human body feels any positive emotion is by seeing yourself move towards a goal," he explains. He advises young men to write down their goals and remind themselves of these goals daily to stay motivated and focused.
Roger also discusses his book, "The Book Everyone Should Read," which focuses on understanding and connecting with other people. He emphasizes the importance of educating young people about human behavior and sociology. By understanding these aspects, young men can navigate their interactions with others more effectively and develop a better sense of self.
