Episode 19: Building Your Confidence Through Your Career

Overcoming Bullying: Catherine Hinckley's Journey

Welcome to the Mindshift Power podcast, where we have raw and honest conversations with teenagers and the adults who work with them. I'm your host, Fatima Bey, the mind shifter. Today, we have with us Catherine Hinckley, the owner and stylist at the Stylist Cat in Massachusetts, and the CEO of Moso Method. Catherine is here to share her incredible journey from bullying to empowerment and the creation of the MOSO Method.

A Rough Beginning

Catherine's journey began with a tough start. As a young girl in the fourth grade, she was severely bullied, earning the cruel nickname "dog chow" because she didn't fit the conventional standards of beauty. This experience had a profound impact on her self-esteem and overshadowed her upbringing. However, she was fortunate to have positive influences in her life that helped her overcome these self-limiting beliefs.

Finding Her Calling

Despite the bullying, Catherine found her passion in the beauty industry. Initially hesitant to pursue hairdressing due to societal expectations, she eventually left college and enrolled in hairdressing school, where she flourished. With over thirty years of experience in the beauty industry, Catherine has worked in various roles, including distribution, manufacturing, and education. She is now an internationally trained educator and business development manager.

The Power of Empowerment

Catherine's journey in the beauty industry has been about more than just making people look good. It's about empowerment. She explains that when people look good, they feel good, and this boost in confidence can be transformative. As a hairdresser, she has the unique opportunity to touch people's lives, both physically and emotionally. Her work is not just about the outward appearance but also about helping clients feel confident and empowered.

Introducing the MOSO Method

Inspired by the story of the MOSO bamboo, Catherine created the MOSO Method, a system for personal and professional growth. The MOSO bamboo is known for its incredible growth, shooting up to 90 feet in just over a month after years of unseen development underground. This story resonated with Catherine, who realized that success often requires patience and consistent effort, even when immediate results are not visible.

The Six-Step MOSO Method

The MOSO Method is a simple six-step program based on the vowels of the American vocabulary: A, E, I, O, U, and Y. These letters represent Attitude, Effort, Intent, Opportunity, Uniqueness, and You. By applying these principles, anyone can achieve their goals.

  • Attitude: Start with a positive mindset and a willingness to grow.
  • Effort: Consistently put in the work required to achieve your goals.
  • Intent: Be intentional with your actions and decisions.
  • Opportunity: Recognize and seize opportunities when they arise.
  • Uniqueness: Embrace your unique qualities and strengths.
  • You: Ultimately, you are the one responsible for making things happen in your life.

Applying the MOSO Method

The MOSO Method is not just for adults; it can also be applied by teenagers and anyone seeking to achieve their goals. Catherine emphasizes the importance of personal accountability and daily behaviors that lead to success. For teenagers, the MOSO Method can be a valuable tool in navigating the challenges of high school, college, and beyond.

Final Thoughts

Catherine Hinckley's journey from being bullied to becoming a successful hairdresser and CEO is a testament to the power of resilience and empowerment. Her creation of the MOSO Method provides a simple yet effective framework for achieving personal and professional growth. By applying the principles of the MOSO Method, anyone can turn their dreams into reality.
