In this episode of the MindShift Power Podcast, we have a powerful conversation with Coach Carmen Duncan, founder of Mission Accomplished Transitional Services. November is Runaway Homeless Youth Month, making this the perfect time to delve into Carmen's inspiring journey from homelessness to becoming a multi-award-winning coach. Fatima Bey, the MindShifter, expertly navigates this emotional and enlightening discussion.
Carmen's journey began as a teenager in Albany, New York. After her father was sentenced to prison, family tensions left her without a home. Despite feeling disconnected and unsupported, Carmen navigated her way through high school by moving from house to house, often relying on the kindness of friends and their families. Her resilience and determination were fueled by the examples set by her mother and grandmother, who taught her the power of perseverance.
Carmen's turning point came when a friend's mother, recognizing her need for stability, took her in. This act of kindness, combined with the support of a guidance counselor at Albany High School, led Carmen to the independent living program through a local community-based organization. This program provided her with housing, allowing her to focus on her education and future.
Throughout her journey, Carmen had several mentors, coaches, and sponsors who played crucial roles in her success. These individuals were not biologically related to her but showed an unwavering commitment to her well-being and growth. Fatima and Carmen emphasize the importance of having a support network that believes in you and your goals, regardless of your background.
Inspired by the support she received, Carmen founded Mission Accomplished Transitional Services to provide similar assistance to teens and young professionals. The organization focuses on career and business education in the fashion, beauty, construction, interior decorating, and mural painting industries. Through internships and advanced programs, Mission Accomplished helps young people build their careers and achieve their goals.
A critical takeaway from Carmen's story is the understanding that our current situations do not define our futures. With resilience, determination, and the right support, anyone can overcome adversity and achieve greatness. Carmen's journey is a testament to the power of community and the impact of dedicated mentors and coaches.
